Salary

The starting salary will be £16,659 (plus up to 20% shift allowance). This is a 24/7 service operating 365 days per year, therefore this role is expected to work on one of tow rotating shift patterns, both of which include weekends. The current shift patterns are either double day shift, which excludes nights and attracts and 12.5% shift allowance or the 24/7 shift, which includes nights and attracts a shift allowance of 20%.

The Highways Agency Traffic Officer is classes as a safety critical role due to the nature of the working environment on the motorway network and dealing with road users.

Key Objectives of the Role

  • To provide the on-road resource to support the development of the Highways Agency's Network Operator role.
  • To reduce incident related congestion.
  • To improve road safety for all road users.
  • To improve journey time reliability by monitoring infratstructure and road works.
  • To improve customer relations by supporting special events.

Main Responsibilities

  • Manage collisions, remove damaged/broken down and abandoned vehicles, and clear debris/animals on carriageway.
  • Undertake high visibility patrols, provide mobile/temporary road closures, and escort or accompany high risk, abnormal and other vehicles.
  • Support crime management- working under Police direction and informing Police of road traffic offences and support enforcement.
  • Attending legal proceedings and support enforcement.
  • Providing limited first aid when first on scene at an accident.

Personal Specification

Eligibility Criteria - Skills & Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in an operational customer focused environment.

OR

  • At least 1 year's experience in an operational customer focused role AND
  • A minimum of 5 O Levels/GCSEs or equivalent.

Eligibility Criteria - Driving

  • A valid UK driving licence held for at least 3 years and with no more than 3 penalty points.
